What is the difference between GNSS and GPS?

Often used interchangeably, GPS and GNSS are not exactly the same.

GPS (Global Positioning System) is the specific satellite navigation system owned by the United States.

GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) is the general term that encompasses all global satellite positioning systems.

This includes the USA's GPS, Russia's GLONASS, Europe's Galileo, and China's BeiDou.

A device that is only 'GPS-compatible' can only receive signals from the GPS satellite constellation.

A 'GNSS-compatible' device, which is the standard for most modern receivers, can receive signals from multiple constellations simultaneously.

This is the key advantage of GNSS.

By accessing satellites from different systems, a GNSS receiver can 'see' more satellites in the sky at any given time.

This results in significant performance improvements: faster time to first fix (the initial calculation of position), higher position accuracy (especially in urban canyons or under dense tree cover where satellite visibility is limited), and greater reliability and redundancy.

If one system experiences an issue, the receiver can rely on the others.

In practical terms, for applications requiring high precision and continuous availability, such as fleet management, autonomous driving, or precision agriculture, relying on GNSS rather than just GPS is crucial.

It ensures a more robust and accurate location service, which is the foundation for all subsequent tracking, navigation, and data analysis functions.
