Fuel consumption calculator

Consumption is the liters added at a fill-up divided by the kilometers driven since the previous one, times 100. For example, 42 liters for 600 km gives 7.0 L/100 km. The calculator also works out the cost of a trip, the range left and a fleet's fuel budget.

Consumption

Cost per kilometer: €0.13 (€0.126)

42 L ÷ 600 km × 100 = 7.0 L/100 km

The three formulas to know

What you wantFormulaExample
Consumption (L/100 km)liters ÷ kilometers × 10042 L ÷ 600 km × 100 = 7.0 L/100 km
Trip cost (€)distance × consumption ÷ 100 × price per liter350 km × 6.5 ÷ 100 × €1.80 = €40.95
Range (km)liters available × 100 ÷ consumption10 L × 100 ÷ 5.0 = 200 km

The €1.80 per liter price is only an example: French pump prices, station by station, are on prix-carburants.gouv.fr. For an electric vehicle, the same formulas work in kWh: 48 kWh for 300 km gives 16.0 kWh/100 km.

Measuring real consumption: the full-tank method

  1. Fill up until the nozzle clicks off, and note the odometer.
  2. Drive as usual, then fill up again, at the same pump if you can.
  3. Divide the liters of the second fill-up by the kilometers driven, and multiply by 100.

Repeat the measurement over several fill-ups: a single one depends too much on when the nozzle clicked off.

Why your consumption differs from the official figure

The manufacturer's figure comes from a standardized test cycle, WLTP. On the road, speed, load, terrain, temperature and driving style all change consumption. Hence the value of measuring your own, vehicle by vehicle.

For a fleet: from a one-off calculation to continuous tracking

A calculation gives a figure. Across a fleet, what matters is the gap: the vehicle that burns more than the others, the fill-up that does not match the mileage, the fuel card used outside working hours.

  • Fleet plan: expenses and fuel attached to each vehicle, a dashboard with 10 views and exports.
  • Fleet + Telematics plan: real-time position and trips, anomaly and fraud detection.
  • Fuel cards: transaction history by card and by vehicle.

Frequently asked questions

Fill up, note the odometer, drive, then fill up again. Divide the liters of the second fill-up by the kilometers driven and multiply by 100. For example, 42 liters for 600 km gives 7.0 liters per 100 km.

Multiply the distance by the consumption, divide by 100, then multiply by the price per liter. For 350 km at 6.5 L/100 km and €1.80 a liter: 22.75 liters, or €40.95. Double it for a round trip: €81.90.

Multiply the liters by 100 and divide by the vehicle's consumption. At 5 liters per 100 km, 10 liters take you 200 km; at 8 liters per 100 km, 125 km.

With the same formula, in kilowatt-hours: divide the energy recharged by the kilometers driven and multiply by 100. 48 kWh for 300 km gives 16.0 kWh/100 km.

By tying every fill-up and every fuel card transaction to the vehicle and its odometer. Dadycar does it in the Fleet plan, at €6 excl. VAT per vehicle per month, with a free 15-day trial.
