Emergency Maintenance

Emergency maintenance is a specific, high-priority subset of corrective maintenance. While all corrective maintenance is unplanned and reactive, emergency maintenance is defined by its urgency and the critical nature of the failure. The key distinguishing factors are:

What characterises it

1. Immediacy: The repair must be performed immediately, without delay. Standard corrective tasks might be scheduled for the next available slot, but an emergency jumps to the front of the queue.
2. Severity of Impact: The failure has a severe consequence. This could be a direct safety hazard (e.g., brake failure), a complete operational stoppage (e.g., a truck stranded on the highway), or a risk of significant, cascading damage to the asset.

Where the line sits

For example, a broken radio is a failure that requires corrective maintenance, but it is not an emergency. A complete engine failure on a loaded truck is an emergency. The goal of any robust maintenance strategy (whether preventive, predictive, or condition-based) is to minimize or entirely eliminate the need for emergency maintenance, which is always the most expensive and disruptive type of repair.
