Driver Identification

Driver identification is the process of knowing which person is driving which vehicle at a given moment. It links every trip, refuelling, driving event, fine and claim to a named driver rather than to a registration plate, which is the precondition for accountability, fair performance reviews and well-run shared vehicles in a company fleet.

Why the vehicle alone is not enough

Most fleet data is recorded per vehicle: position, mileage, alerts, fuel. As long as one vehicle belongs to one employee, the link is obvious. It breaks as soon as vehicles are shared between teams, swapped during repairs or booked from a pool. Without identification, a speeding notice, a dent or an unusual fuel card transaction arrives with no one to match it, and a driver scorecard ends up mixing the habits of several people.

The main identification methods

• Assignment records: the fleet software keeps who has which vehicle and for which period, for named vehicles as well as pool bookings.
• RFID badges: the driver presents a personal badge to a reader in the vehicle, often when picking up a shared car.
