What is NLP and what role does it play in conversational AI?

Natural Language Processing (NLP) is the technology that bridges the gap between human communication and computer understanding.

It combines computational linguistics—rule-based modeling of human language—with statistical and machine learning models.

The goal of NLP is to enable a computer to 'understand' the full meaning of text or speech, including context and intent.

NLP involves several tasks.

Natural Language Understanding (NLU) focuses on deciphering the meaning, intent, and sentiment from the input.

For example, understanding that 'Find a cheap place to eat' is a request for a low-cost restaurant.

Natural Language Generation (NLG) is the reverse process: it formulates a grammatically correct and natural-sounding response in human language.

NLP is the absolute core of conversational AI.

Without NLP, a voice assistant would be a simple command-line interface that only responds to rigid, pre-programmed phrases.

With NLP, it can understand variations in phrasing, slang, and ambiguity.

It allows the system to parse a complex sentence, identify the key entities (like 'restaurant' and 'cheap'), understand the user's goal, and generate a helpful, context-aware reply.

It's what makes the conversation feel natural and intelligent.
