What is the difference between condition-based and predictive maintenance?
Condition-Based Maintenance (CBM) and Predictive Maintenance (PdM) are both proactive strategies, but they differ in their level of foresight.
CBM is a more direct approach: 'Maintain when there is evidence of need.
' It relies on real-time sensor data to monitor the health of a component against pre-set thresholds.
A maintenance alert is triggered only when a threshold is crossed, indicating that the component is degrading or has begun to fail.
For example, 'Perform maintenance when the brake pad thickness sensor reads less than 3mm.
' Predictive Maintenance (PdM) is more advanced.
It answers the question, 'When will maintenance be needed in the future?'.
Instead of using fixed thresholds, PdM uses machine learning algorithms to analyze trends and patterns in the data to forecast a failure well in advance.
For example, 'Based on current wear patterns, the brake pads will likely need replacement in the next 1,500 miles.
' In short, CBM is reactive to the current condition, while PdM is proactive about a future condition.
CBM is an excellent first step away from scheduled maintenance, as it ensures work is only done when needed.
PdM is the next evolution, allowing for much better long-term planning, resource allocation, and optimization of maintenance operations.
Many advanced systems use a combination of both.
