What are the daily and weekly rest period rules for drivers in Europe?

Alongside driving time, driver rest periods are a cornerstone of EU road transport regulations (EC 561/2006) to ensure drivers are adequately rested.

The rules define specific minimum rest periods: - **Daily Rest Period:** Within each 24-hour period after the end of the previous rest period, a driver must take a new daily rest.

A 'regular' daily rest is an uninterrupted period of at least 11 hours.

A 'reduced' daily rest is an uninterrupted period of at least 9 hours, but this is only allowed three times between any two weekly rest periods.

- **Weekly Rest Period:** A driver must start a weekly rest period after no more than six 24-hour periods from the end of the previous weekly rest.

A 'regular' weekly rest is an uninterrupted period of at least 45 hours.

A 'reduced' weekly rest is an uninterrupted period of at least 24 hours.

Any reduction must be compensated by an equivalent period of rest taken in one block before the end of the third week following.

Properly managing these complex rest rules is essential for fleet compliance and driver well-being.
