What is a telematics device used for and what data does it collect?

The telematics device is the hardware core of any modern fleet management system.

It's a compact yet powerful device that acts as a bridge between the physical vehicle and the tracking software platform.

Its primary function is to collect, process, and transmit a multitude of information in real time.

Its operation relies on several key components: 1.

**GPS Receiver:** It determines the vehicle's exact position, speed, and direction.

This is the foundation of fleet tracking, allowing for route visualization and optimization.

**Accelerometer and Gyroscope:** These sensors detect sudden movements, such as harsh braking, rapid acceleration, sharp turns, and potential impacts.

This data is crucial for assessing driving safety and reducing accident risks.

**Vehicle Interface Connector:** The device connects to the vehicle's internal systems, most commonly via the On-Board Diagnostics (OBD-II) port for light vehicles, or through hardwiring for heavy trucks.

This connection provides access to valuable engine data: fuel consumption, mileage, diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), engine RPM, etc.
