Predictive Sensors
A 'predictive sensor' is a term for a standard sensor whose data is analyzed by a machine learning model to predict future states or failures.
Are sensors themselves predictive, or is it the AI behind them?
This is a key distinction: a sensor itself is not inherently 'predictive'. A sensor's job is to measure a physical property—like temperature, pressure, or vibration—and convert it into a digital signal. The 'predictive' capability doesn't come from the hardware, but from the software that analyzes its data.

The term 'predictive sensor' is best understood as a system where a sensor is coupled with a predictive model. The sensor provides the continuous stream of raw data. A machine learning algorithm, which has been trained on historical data, analyzes this stream in real-time. The algorithm learns the subtle patterns and trends in the sensor readings that signal an impending event, like a component failure.
A concrete example
For example, a simple vibration sensor becomes part of a 'predictive' system when an AI model learns that a specific increase in a certain vibration frequency consistently precedes a bearing failure. The sensor just reports the vibration; the AI provides the prediction. Therefore, the power of a predictive sensor lies in the intelligence of the analytical model interpreting its data, transforming a simple measurement into valuable foresight.
