What is the difference between maintenance planning and scheduling?

While often used together, planning and scheduling are two distinct phases.

Maintenance planning is the 'what' and 'how', while scheduling is the 'who' and 'when'.

Planning is the preparatory work done to ensure a task can be executed efficiently.

A maintenance planner will: - Define the scope of the job (what exactly needs to be done).

- Identify the necessary procedures and safety precautions.

- Determine which tools, equipment, and spare parts are required.

- Estimate the labor hours and skills needed for the task.

- Create a detailed work package or work order.

Only once a job is fully planned does it move to the scheduling phase.

The scheduler then takes the planned work package and assigns a specific technician (the 'who') and a specific date and time (the 'when') for the work to be carried out.

Effective planning is the foundation of efficient maintenance; without it, scheduling is just assigning unprepared people to do an undefined job, leading to delays and wasted resources.
