What is a ZFE-m and what vehicles are affected?
A ZFE-m (Zone à Faibles Émissions mobilité) is a tool used by French local authorities (cities and metropolitan areas) to combat air pollution.
Within the perimeter of a ZFE-m, traffic restrictions apply to certain vehicles based on their pollution level, which is certified by a Crit'Air sticker.
The rules are not uniform across the country.
Each local authority decides on the geographical scope of the zone, the vehicle categories concerned (cars, LCVs, trucks), the days and times the restrictions apply, and which Crit'Air classes are banned.
The list of banned vehicle classes becomes progressively stricter over time.
For transport companies, this means that access to major urban centers may be impossible for their older, more polluting vehicles.
Operating in these areas requires a modern, cleaner fleet.
Failure to comply with ZFE-m restrictions (driving in the zone without the correct Crit'Air sticker or with a banned one) can result in fines.
Managing a fleet's eligibility for different ZFEs is a major logistical and strategic challenge.
