Fast Charging
Fast charging (or DC charging) is a technology that allows an electric vehicle's battery to be recharged in a very short time, typically 20 to 40 minutes to reach 80% charge. It uses high-power direct current (DC).
When should fast charging be used for a business fleet?
Fast charging is a strategic tool, but not a one-size-fits-all solution. Its use is relevant in specific cases:
When it is justified
- High-Turnover Vehicles: For vehicles that make multiple trips per day and don't have time for a full overnight charge. A fast charging session during the driver's lunch break can be sufficient.
- Long Distances and Unforeseen Events: For journeys that exceed the vehicle's range, fast charging on major routes is essential to continue the mission.
- Operational Troubleshooting: If a vehicle was not properly charged overnight, a quick morning session can save its workday.
What it costs
However, due to its cost (installation and higher kWh price) and its impact on the battery, the core strategy for a fleet should remain slow (AC) charging at the depot overnight. Fast charging is the complement that provides flexibility.
