Hydrogen Vehicle
A hydrogen vehicle (FCEV - Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle) is a type of electric vehicle that produces its own electricity on board using a hydrogen-powered fuel cell. It only emits water vapor.
Hydrogen or battery electric: what is the best solution for fleets?
The question isn't 'which is better?' but 'which is best suited for what purpose?'. The two technologies are complementary:
Battery, for which uses
- Battery Electric (BEV):
- Ideal for: Light commercial vehicles, regional transport, last-mile delivery. Uses with long parking times allowing for charging.
- Advantages: More developed charging infrastructure, better overall energy efficiency ('well-to-wheel'), lower running cost.
- Disadvantages: Long charging time, battery weight, limited range for heavy transport.
Hydrogen, for which uses
- Hydrogen (FCEV):
- Ideal for: Heavy-duty trucks, long-haul transport, buses. Intensive 24/7 operations.
- Advantages: Very fast refueling time (similar to diesel), long range, less weight than equivalent batteries.
- Disadvantages: Nearly non-existent refueling infrastructure, high cost of vehicles and 'green' hydrogen, lower energy efficiency.
